Reserach Proposal on Leadership Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Reserach on Leadership - Research Proposal Example Transformational initiative is progressively observed as basic, not just in the serious scene of an association, yet in addition to the leader’s sway on group adequacy (Grant, 2012; Ozaralli, 2003). Progressively, pioneers are not just confronted with the test of how to present change, yet additionally how to oversee change (Watkins, 2004), which appears to be particularly significant when the presentation of the new pioneer is the change. Watkins (2003) takes note of that on normal twelve representatives are affected by another supervisor. This finding suggests that what the new pioneer experiencing significant change does would influence a wide system of representatives and, thus, execution inside the association. Since transformational authority is considered as basic for group execution, this exploration study tries to look at the connection between transformational initiative style and group viability for new pioneers experiencing significant change, with a unique spotlig ht on proficient information based work groups Problem/Opportunity Statement Most associations in the present business atmosphere are exceptionally subject to pioneers to lead associations to progress. This reliance is particularly so in the present high serious business condition described by high pioneer turnover, visit change, and high responsibility to partners (Grant, 2012; Hoffman, Bynum, Piccolo, and Sutton, 2011; Stewart, 1992). The issue is that associations and pioneers have neglected to execute powerful authority change activity plans, which may prompt negative impacts, for example, pioneer pressure, diminished efficiency, higher turnover, and ineffectual group execution (Gilmore, 2003). Understanding the job of transformational initiative in authority change and the effect that it has on group adequacy would be a fundamental asset in understanding create compelling administration progress plan. Both Wageman, Hackman, and Lehmen (2005), who proposed a model of group viabi lity in a hierarchical setting, and Manderscheid and Ardichvili (2008), who proposed a matched model incorporating administration progress hypothesis that proposes compelling group connections are the consequence of fruitful authority advances, set that transformational initiative style might be a basic achievement factor for group adequacy and the accomplishment of new pioneers (Appelbaum and Valero, 2007). Watkins (2004) kept up that, to quicken the change and gather speed, the new pioneer must be able to connect with and impact numerous people all through the association â€Å"using vision, skill and drive† (p. 16). Dissimilar to very much prepared pioneers who may make them comprehend on what works in groups or how to deal with different difficulties that emerge in fresher groups that they are confronted with, new pioneers do not have the experience of managing such difficulties. Most just have hypothetical information. Past writing have delineated transformational author ity as the best in empowering group execution and viability (Wageman, Hackman, and Lehmen, 2005). Despite the fact that there is considerable research on administration style and group viability, there is less on new pioneer change (Manderscheid and Ardichvili, 2008). The vast majority of the examination have concentrated on methodologies to be utilized in changing a pioneer (Manderscheid, 2008), formal mediations that associations need to embrace in making a difference

The redundancy of an entire line may e utilized in what is known as an envelope-verse design, or might be utilized as an abstain toward the finish of each line.

Introducing the Comma

Presenting the Comma Presenting the Comma Presenting the Comma By Erin Commas are a precarious little bit of accentuation, and they give numerous individuals migraines. In my understudies expositions, I often observe commas where they dont have a place, and I see vital commas forgot about. I make it one of my objectives to help demystify the comma for my understudies. The most widely recognized missing comma is the one that comes after a starting component in a sentence. You need a comma after an early on word: As a matter of fact, Ive never been to Disney World. After an early on express: After the tempest, numerous individuals were without power for a considerable length of time. What's more, after a starting proviso: Since it was so hot outside, we chose to remain at home. For the most part, its safe to utilize a comma in any of these cases. Be cautious, thoughsometimes what resembles a starting expression is really the subject of the sentence: Beginning a paper without doing your examination is never a smart thought. Regarding life, what to think about it is the issue. (expressions of remorse to Mr. Shakespeare) On the off chance that a sentence begins with an ing word (- ing) or infinitive (to+verb) state, utilizing a comma is inaccurate! One method of creating mechanical work from liquid under tension is to utilize the strain to quicken the liquid to a high speed in a fly. The fly is coordinated on to the vanes of a turbine wheel, which is pivoted by the power created on the vanes because of the force change or drive which happens as the stream strikes the vanes. Water turbines chipping away at this motivation rule have been developed with yields of the request for 100,000 kW and with efficiencies more noteworthy than 90%. In this analysis, the power produced by a fly of water as it strikes a level plate, funnel shaped plate, and hemispherical cup might be estimated and contrasted and the energy stream rate in the fly. 2. Portrayal OF APPARATUS The Jet Impact Apparatus, H8, has been intended for use with the Hydraulic Bench, H1. This gives the fundamental water gracefully and stream estimation office. The spout and vane are contained inside a straightforward chamber; at the base of the chamber there is an outlet by which the stream might be coordinated to the gauging tank. As prosecuted in Fig. 1, the vane is upheld by a switch which conveys a racer weight and which is controlled by a light spring. The switch might be set to a reasonable situation (as demonstrated by the count suspended from it) by putting the racer weight at its zero position and afterward changing the knurled nut over the spring. Any power produced by effect of the stream on the vane may now be estimated by moving the racer weight along the switch until the count shows that the switch has been reestablished to its unique adjusted position. Figure 1. Diagrammatic Arrangement of Apparatus. 3. Foundation Consider a vane balanced about the x-pivot as appeared in Fig. 2. A stream of liquid streaming at the pace of EMBED Equation.3 (kg/s) along the x-pivot with the speed uo (m/s) strikes the vane and is avoided by it through an angleî ², so the liquid leaves the vane with the speed u1 (m/s) slanted at a point ÃŽ ² to the x-hub. Changes in rise and in piezometric pressure in the fly from striking the vane to leaving it are ignored. Figure 2. Vane even about x-pivot. Force enters the framework in the x heading at a pace of: Install Equation.3 Energy leaves the framework a similar way at a pace of: EMBED Equation.3 The power on the vane in the x bearing is equivalent to the pace of progress of energy change. Certain regions in the brains of alcoholics shrink, creating lesions that result in deficits in brain function. Brain imaging research has shown that the prefrontal cortex (in the front of the brain) and regions of the cerebellum (in the lower back of the brain) are particularly vulnerable to the effects of long-term alcohol abuse. This means that heavy alcohol use over a long period of time will damage regions of the brain that control executive function (the prefrontal cortex) and balance and postural stability (the cerebellum). Brain Damage Due to Alcoholism Therefore, chronic alcoholics can progress to the point that they no longer have the ability to walk a straight line even when sober or stand on one foot, especially in the dark or when their eyes are closed. Additionally, long-time alcoholics can develop deficits in the executive functioning of their brains, meaning they can demonstrate problems in putting items in order, solving problems, multitasking and problems with their working memory. Scientific studies of the brain damage caused by alcoholism have consistently shown disproportionately greater deficits in executive and balance functions compared with other components of brain function. How Alcohol Damages the Brain Link Between Balance, Executive Function When researchers began to look at why these two functions were more affected by lesions created by heavy alcohol consumption, compared to others, they found a relationship between the deficits in the cerebellum and those of the prefrontal cortex. They found that the extent of cerebellar volume shrinkage was predictive of executive function deficits. In other words, if an alcoholic had problems with balance, he almost always had greater executive function deficits. For example, a shrinkage of the cerebellum (which controls balance), but not the parietal cortex, was a predictor for the loss of spatial visualization ability, which is the ability to mentally manipulate 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional figures. Circuitry Also Damaged by Alcohol A Stanford University School of Medicine researcher theorized that the deficits caused by lesions in the prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum are compounded because the circuitry in the brain that the two regions use to communicate with each other is likewise damaged by shrinkage due to alcohol abuse. Information from the frontal cortex of the brain flows through the pons to the cerebellum, while in the meantime, information from the cerebellum flows through the thalamus to the frontal cortex. Previous MRI studies of the brains of alcoholics found significant volume deficits in the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis, pons, and thalamus as well as the prefrontal, frontal, and parietal cortex. How Alcohol Shrinks Brain Circuitry Circuitry Deficits Compound the Problem Professor Edith Sullivans complex and detailed examination of the front-to-cerebellar circuitry of the brains of 25 nonamnesic alcoholic men found that each major node of the circuitry showed volume deficits from alcoholism. Sullivan found that disruption of these brain circuits could compound the deficits produced by shrinkage in the frontal cortex and the cerebellum either by interruption of the circuitry or by abnormalities found in the individual nodes themselves. The study also found that the cerebellum, through the brain circuitry, could significantly affect the function of the prefrontal cortex, perhaps explaining why a lack of balance in alcoholics was a predictor of a loss of executive function. The good news is that other studies have found that the brain shrinkage caused by alcoholism will begin to reverse itself when people stop drinking.

Essay about The Important Role of News Reporters - 2236 Words

The Important Role of News Reporters Every morning when I get up, the very first thing I do is turn on the TV--but not for cartoons or MTV. It has become a habit for me to watch the news in the morning. I feel the need to know what is going on because I know that no matter where the news happens, 99 percent of the time it will, directly or indirectly, affect me or people I care about. The broadcast media has become a part of my life and the lives of almost everyone in the Western world. We may not know the names of our senators, but Katie Couric or Tom Brokaw are familiar names in every American household. Not many of us realize, however, that the job of the news reporter is not as glorious as we imagine. This paper will offer you a†¦show more content†¦It is believed that the audience will not put any special effort in trying to comprehend the story--if it is confusing, they will change the channel. This applies especially to the broadcast media. Unlike a reader with a newspaper, the listener/viewer does not h ave an option of rereading a confusing sentence for better understanding. If one aspect of a story is missed or misunderstood because of poor wording, there is no way of rewinding the tape to get back to it. Therefore, broadcast journalists must be very clear and concise in their writing and try to avoid long names, titles, or big numbers. To illustrate this point, here is a newspaper paragraph. Try to read it out loud like a newscaster and decide if it is easily understandable to a driver who is battling the morning traffic while listening to your newscast. Surgeon General William H. Shearer announced today that Charles R. Mahaffey, 45, chairman of the US Pharmaceutical Corporation, had succeeded Donald P. Ingraham, 64, president of the National Educational Media Association, to head the governments Anti-Smoking Campaign starting next month (Shook 13). Analysis Of The Movie The Home - 1035 Words

THE HOME The non-descript building nestled in the northwest corner of the airport land. Lori Ann Walker had driven on the street on its east side many times. Today the building was of interest because she had interviewed for a job there. The interview was not conducted there but at a downtown office. When she had asked the name and location of the nursing home, the interviewer sternly told her to call back in two days. She wondered at the secrecy but when she had made the call yesterday, the response was warm and inviting. The building bore no signage and only the address, 6720 Airport Road, hung in small letters on the chain-link fence that surrounded the building. Lori kept her interview appointment the next day. Mrs. Sedge, competent and assertive, asked several questions before answering Lori’s questions. One of the questions puzzled Lori. Mrs. Sedge asked about her normal routine on holidays. Lori assured her that she could work holidays and weekends. Her family was small and scattered. â€Å"How did you spend Thanksgiving last year?† asked Mrs. Sedge. Lori had to think for several seconds before answering. â€Å"I worked.† Mrs. Sedge turned some pages and said, â€Å"Oh, yes. This rule also applies to visual aids which cannot be easily incorporated into the text due to it's size such as graphs that are used to indicate a particular correlation. Any APA formatting research paper requires the assignment to be typed up no matter what. Make use of double-spaced lines on a standard size A4 paper that has a 1-inch margin on all sides. As far as fonts go it is required students stick to the recommended 12 point size Times New Roman font. Page numbers are to be placed in the top right-hand corner. It is recommended that an APA citation style title does not exceed 12 words in length, and should not be typed in all capital letters like the header while also avoiding senseless information or abbreviations. In most cases, the APA citation style title uses one or two lines of physical space on the page. The next step in the APA citation format is to write up the author’s name followed up by the university or institution the paper is affiliated with. Generally, the word limits for it range from 150 words to a maximum of 250. In some cases, due to the highly technical nature of the topic, the APA citation format dictates we make use of a particular list of keywords specific to an academic sphere. Below we will explore the most encountered questions by students when trying to incorporate their references as APA in-text citations. Citing one or multiple authors using the APA citation style In this case, the APA citation format changes according to the number of authors as well as how the student wishes to display them. One Author: According to the research done by Taplin (2017) we can see the difference in†¦ Two To Five Authors: For the first in-text citation we must mention all the authors involved. The following mentions only include the main/first author's name followed by et al. The studies conducted by Bernes, Kerry, Smith, Peterson, Kellerman (2007) indicates†¦ Bernes et al., (2007) Six Authors: Smith et al. (2012) sought to prove†¦ Paraphrasing and summarizing As stated by Kellerman (2004), mastering the APA citation format is a difficult task for first-timers. Or The art of mastering the APA citation format is always a demanding task for young academics ( Kellerman, 2004, p. 214) Providing the page number in the second example is optional. Short and long quotations Any quotations having more than 40 words are considered long according to the APA citation style. Nonetheless, the more extended version does not make use of parentheses but instead makes use of a free-standing block of typewritten lines. Both require the author and year of publication to be mentioned. If you still confused feel free to use our essay service online features (contact authors directly, or just use support). or Check quick video - APA Citation Guide (for lazy students) ? What is the difference between using a APA citation guide vs a APA citation website? As for upcoming future world leaders, it is only instinctual to ask such questions. Nonetheless, as appealing as using a direct APA citation website sounds it is not all it's cracked up to be. In essence, despite providing a much faster approach to organizing one's sources, the result produced by an APA citation website is not always correct. Most of them will require a simple online link or the ISBN of the book to create it. However, the student still has to double check the APA citation style for mistakes or omissions. As funny as it might sound a number of these APA citation websites are unable to find dates or authors despite them being explicitly listed on the web page. Having been a student myself, it is quite frustrating to go through such a process when pressed for time since there are a lot of small details requiring careful consideration to come out perfect. Thus, an APA citation guide provides one with the confidence needed to be confident in the result and its quality. However, it is important to note that trying to make use of an APA citation website to ease the workload is not all doom and gloom. The one aspect they do shine in is helping students structure their online resources faster, but it has to be taken with a pinch of salt due to the small errors which can occur. The Greenback Party essays

The Greenback Party essays The campaign had consisted mostly of persons with agrarian interests. They were people whose lives centered around their land and culture. In addition to this, they had a desire to maintain an increase the amount of paper money in circulation. This campaign was the beginning of the Greenback movement. The withdrawal by anti-federalists had opened the way for monetary changes by the Union government. Greenbacks first came into existence when the U.S. Department of Treasury was given the right, in 1862, to issue notes that were not changeable into specie (hard money like gold or silver) but were authorized as legal tender for most purposes. Although the Norths record on inflation stands up well in comparison with the experience of triumphant countries in later wars, the Greenbacks worth in gold fell to half the supposed value. Their use had in any case only been intended as a temporary measure and the government started reducing the number in circulation; however, this had coin cided with and reinforced a depression that led to the formation of the Greenback Party in 1875, which had campaigned for an increase in note circulation. Between 1862 and 1865, the U.S. Government had issued more than $450,000,000 in paper money that was not backed by gold (greenbacks - legal tender notes) to help finance the Union cause in the American Civil War. The idea that preserving a flexible supply of paper money served the interests of working people, while paper money backed by specie benefited only the rich. After the war, economic conservatives demanded that the government retire the greenbacks, but the farmers and others who wished to maintain high prices opposed that move. It was in 1868 that the Democrats gave partial support to the Greenback movement by endorsing a plan that called for the redemption of certain war bonds by the issuance of new greenbacks. The Greenback Party which by 1878 had 482 clubs, incl...

What Do ACT Scores Measure IQ Income

What Do ACT Scores Measure IQ Income SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips ACT scores are a fixture of the college admissions process, but what do they really measure? Are they a useful way to judge your abilities and potential? In this article, I’ll give you the details on what the ACT can and can’t measure and how to interpret your scores as a high school student. Do ACT Scores Measure General Intelligence? Since there are many different types of intelligence, this is a complicated question.High scores on the ACT might be derived from a high level of innate intelligence and a good education, but they might also be derived from relatively average innate intelligence and extensive prep work.ACT scores change dramatically based on students’ level of preparation, which separates them from scores on your basic IQ test. (Although IQ tests are also highly flawed measures of intelligence - I won’t get into that here!) A student’s ACT scores are subject not only to his or her level of intelligence, but also to his or her desire for improvement and overall academic drive.Since it’s possible to improve ACT scores through prep, they don’t always measure intelligence in the traditional sense. A student who has the motivation to prepare for the ACT and understands the stakes of the test demonstrates a form of intelligence just by providing such a strong display of conscientiousness. This is why it’s hard to make concrete judgments about whether the ACT can measure innate intelligence or not.It measures different qualities for different people depending on how they got to their scores. The ACT also isn’t as similar to traditional IQ tests as the SAT.The SAT was originally derived from an IQ test, and there are vestiges of that format left over on the current model. The ACT, on the other hand, was developed as an alternative to the SAT.Its goal was to test material that was learned in school, not just overall cognitive reasoning ability. For this reason, the ACT is generally a more straightforward test.Still, the ACT is more similar to the SAT than most people think. For example, the science section is really just a bunch of logical reasoning questions cloaked in largely extraneous scientific facts. This business must be science related! No one would use symbols for the elements just to make a bad pun that has nothing to do with what they're selling! The ACT, like the SAT, also runs into problems with social inequalities that cause poor students to score lower on the test regardless of â€Å"intelligence†.This disparity means that there are other major issues with claiming that the ACT can accurately measure a student’s intelligence level. Two students with relatively equal intelligence but different qualities of high school education may both take the ACT and end up with vastly different scores. Poor students are less likely to have access to expensive specialized prep programs and more likely to attend underfunded schools that provide a less comprehensive education. The fact that these students score lower means that the ACT is technically doing its job in measuring college readiness, but it also means that test scores could be preventing some intelligent but socioeconomically disadvantaged students back from reaching their full potentials. The intent of the ACT from the beginning was not to measure intelligence as a general quality but to measure what students learned in school and gauge their college and career readiness (a model that the College Board has tried to emulate on the latest version of the SAT).It's less of a measure of intelligence than it is a measure of college preparedness, and even then it doesn’t give you the entire picture. While innate intelligence certainly plays a role, scores are also affected by many other factors that don’t have much to do with a person’s overall cognitive abilities. Do ACT Scores Measure Career Potential? This is another tough question, because there are so many different career paths that you might take. In some of these fields, the skill sets that allow you to do well on the ACT might not be as relevant. Most people will need basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills in their careers (and in adult life in general), but it’s hard to say whether an exceptional score on the ACT means you’ll do any better in your career than someone who got an average score. One fact that we know for sure is that ACT scores correlate strongly with parental income. This means that students with wealthy parents are more likely to do well on the ACT. These students are also more likely to earn high incomes later in life. This benefit has less to do with their performance on the ACT and more to do with their socioeconomic status. Students with wealthier parents can afford specialized prep courses and don’t have as much trouble paying for expensive colleges. They end up with less debt and better access to the careers that interest them. There’s a long legacy of economic inequality at play here, and standardized tests are a part of that (although there are much bigger societal forces at its root). As I’ve said, however, the skills required to succeed in the job world are often different from the skills required to do well on the ACT.For this reason, your scores aren’t always the most accurate measurement of your career potential. They don’t tell you anything about your ability to manage other people or complete long term projects reliably. ACT scores provide a rough baseline measurement of your knowledge of math, language, and logic (I won’t say science because the science section is really just about logical reasoning). They can’t measure how well you’ll use these basic skills on a larger scale in more complex scenarios, and they can’t measure your interpersonal strengths. Ben, I hate to tell you this, but this entire notebook is just filled with the word "synergy" written over and over again. Are you ok? What Will Your ACT Scores Really Tell You? Should You Listen? It may or may not be useful for you to measure your abilities based on your ACT scores. In certain contexts and for certain students, they can be a helpful guide. In other scenarios, making judgments based on these scores is not productive. ACT Scores Are a More Useful Measurement If: You Plan to Apply to Colleges That Require Standardized Test Scores ACT scores are important if you’re applying to colleges that require you to submit test results. In this case, they can act as an accurate measurement of your likelihood of acceptance based on admissions statistics.By googling the name of a college in conjunction with the phrase â€Å"PrepScholar admissions statistics†, you can get an idea of where you stand and what your target score should be. Make a study plan that aligns with your goals for improvement so that you’ll have a better chance at being admitted to a college you love. You Have a GPA That’s on the Lower Side ACT scores are a more useful measurement for students with low GPAs because they can serve as a wake up call if they’re especially high or low. If you have a low GPA but a high ACT score, this is a red flag telling you that you're probably capable of doing better in school. It most likely means that if you put in more effort, you would be able to earn higher grades. It also tells you that you have the potential to succeed in college if you adopt better study habits.Your high ACT score is also going to be particularly valuable to you in the college admissions process, so it’s more important to pay attention to your scores and take them seriously. If you have a low ACT score and a low GPA, this is also useful because it indicates that you’re missing out on key concepts in your classes. This could be a problem when you get to college. It also means you might encounter issues in the admissions process depending on where you apply and how low your scores and GPA are in comparison to each college's expectations. A low ACT score combined with a low GPA might prompt you to take more drastic measures to remedy your problems in school. The ACT can give you that extra push to address underlying issues that could cause you problems in college and beyond. Your Score Is Especially High or Low For scores that are in the middle range (16-24 represents the middle 50 percent of test takers) the ACT is a more ambiguous measurement of academic ability. However, if your scores are very high or very low, the ACT may be a more useful measurement for you.A very high score means that you likely have strong reasoning abilities and are well-prepared to take on college academics. It also means that you’ll have a lot of choices in the college application process. A very low score means that you probably have some big gaps in your content knowledge and struggle with time pressure. It also means that you'll have fewer choices for college, so you should take your score into account when planning where to apply. Extreme scores are major indications of how well-prepared you are to take on academic challenges in college.Standardized tests like the ACT can tell you things about your overall knowledge and reasoning abilities that your grades in high school might spell out less clearly. If your scores are XTREME, you should consider them more strongly. ACT Scores Are a Less Useful Measurement If: You Plan to Apply to Test Optional Colleges or Go Into a Professional Job Training Program After High School If you don’t plan on applying to colleges that require you to submit ACT or SAT scores, you won’t need to consider the ACT as seriously as a measurement of your abilities.High scores can help you even at a test optional college, but they’re not a critical component of admissions decisions. You might still pay some attention to your scores to ensure that they’re not low enough to indicate any major gaps in your knowledge, but overall they're not as important for you. You Have a High GPA ACT scores aren't as critical of a measurementif your GPA is already very high. When I say "very high", I mean a GPA that indicates that you earned mostly As in high level classes throughout high school. Usually this would be between a 3.7 and a 5.0 depending on whether your school uses a weighted or unweighted GPA scale. As long as your ACT scores aren't extremely low (below the 25th percentile score of 16), they won’t kill your chances of getting into college. Judging yourself based on your scores when you already have a high GPA can be a bad idea because it might make you think less of your academic abilities. Many people struggle with time on the ACT, resulting in lower scores than their performance in high school would predict. It’s still a good idea to try and improve your scores if you’re looking to get into selective colleges, but in these cases you have to remind yourself not to take your scores too seriously as a measurement of your potential. Overall, You Shouldn’t Make Sweeping Judgements About Your Abilities Based on Your ACT Score Your ACT score isa limited measurement of specific academic skills, and it doesn’t give you a complete picture of your potential.Scores are a useful benchmark in assessing basic subject knowledge and deciding where to apply to college, but don’t make any assumptions about what you’re capable of accomplishing in life based on your scores alone. If you're worried about your scores, you can always improve with dedicated studying! Human Biology - Essay Example Fixation therefore preserves protoplasm, prevents autolytic changes and bacterial growth (Pawley, 2006, p. 370). After this, tissue sample should undergo dehydration, clearing and embedding. These processes ensure tissue sample is dehydrated or cleared from fixated agents and solidified to provide strong support to tissue blocks to make cutting in thin sections possible (Pawley, 2006, p.370). In bright field light microscopy staining for routine histological examination of tissue sections enhances natural contrast making tissues or cells more visible. Into the Lions Mouth :: China Chinese Culture Papers

Into the Lion's Mouth It is the last Saturday in September and the Brown University lion dance team is about to perform. Eleven students sit on the floor of Leung Gallery. The nine team members walk to the front of the room, seven Chinese, two Caucasian. Each wears a shirt bearing a black and white lion design on the front and the words "Brown Lion Dance" emblazed across the back. The boys who will make up the two lions - Grant, John, Chris and Michael - wear bright yellow pants with orange and gold tassels encircling each leg, meant to mimic fur. The instrumentalists, Cisco and Larissa, wear black pants and black shoes, and Peter Quon, the teaser, sports a navy blue silk ensemble reminiscent of a rich man's pajamas. He dons a mask made of brightly lacquered peach paper mache, with pink dots for cheeks, ruby red lips and thick, black eyebrows. He will signal the lions into place for each stunt. The four boys disappear underneath the heads and tails. The team's captain Brian Fong welcomes the freshmen, but keeps his remarks brief. He can't convey this magic - this magic that keeps him and his team here, week after week, year after year - with words. Brian and the team members move into place. Cisco raises his drumsticks and brings them down hard on the drums. The cymbals crash. The performance begins. Historians trace Chinese lion dancing back to a band of roving Persians who traveled to China via the Silk Road during the T'ang Dynasty (618- 906 A.D.). They performed their Nevruz ("New Day") festival for the emperor who, like his people, had never seen a lion before. The Persians' dance pleased the emperor so much that he ordered the lion to be incorporated into the most important of Chinese festivals, the Harvest Moon and New Year's celebrations. The Chinese, however love to tell another story of how this art form came to be: the Legend of the Nien. In ancient times, a creature called the Nien roamed throughout China, devouring man and beast. News of these atrocities reached a remote mountain village and prompted its inhabitants to seek protection from the mighty lion. When the Nien finally stormed into the village, the lion intercepted him and the two beasts fought a terrible battle. The lion emerged victorious and the wounded Nien slunk away into the shadows of the forest, vowing to return in exactly one year to exact vengeance.
